Northumbria Basketball Programme aims to provide a great opportunity for both Men and Women as recreational and performance athletes to participate in an impressive environment.
For the performance athlete, we provide the major route to professionalism by having our own Team Northumbria Basketball National League teams for women and men and a direct link the Newcastle Eagles. Both Men’s and Women’s 1st teams also play in Premiership BUCS competition. The recreational athlete can also enjoy the basketball life at Northumbria by participating at other levels of competition, be it the 2nd teams or the local league teams. Alternatively you may want to play in the USL basketball league. We also provide opportunity for the enthusiast, by the inclusion of the Coaching in the Community programme, which plays a major part in the development of Basketball at Northumbria and the region.
Team Northumbria is the Academy team for Newcastle Eagles and entered NBL Division 3 in 2000. The team won the EBL Shield, and finished as runners-up in EBL3 North, in 2006. The Club is based at Northumbria University, and in the 2006/7 season they participated in the BUCS Premier League as well as in National League Division 2. National League games will tip off at 6 p.m. on Saturdays and promises to be fun for all the family. Northumbria womens team started as South Tyneside and entered National Basketball League 2nd Division in 1989, playing at South Shields. In 1994 the team amalgamated with Sunderland Ladies to become Tyne & Wear and immediately won the league. Although the team competed in many finals they had to wait until 2000-2001 to lift their next trophy as Division 2 Play-off Champions.
In 2001 the team linked with Northumbria University and built on their previous success with the team being crowned play-off champions in 2004-2005. The team followed in the Eagles foot steps the next season as they lifted all trophies including league, play-off and National Trophy. The team took promotion to the 1st Division for the 2006-2007 season and as they made their mark within league play they dominated the British Universities Final 8's to take the title of BUCS Champions.
Tyne and Wear Basketball Development Officer Deirdre Hayes, who is head coach for the women's programme, led the University team to their first BUCS Championship.
