Northumbria University has been at the forefront of Rugby Union in the UK for the past decade. The Club fields five men`s sides and three women`s side on a weekly basis.
The BUCS Men`s 1st XV won the Premier A North League in 2007, ending their BUSA campaign after closely losing the semi-finals of the knock-out rounds to UWIC. University sevens teams were also successful in the past season with wins in the County and Scarborough 7's tournaments.
The club has recently introduced Team Northumbria Men's 1st XV, who are off to a flying start in the Durham/Northumberland 3 League in their debut season.
The teams boast some great talent with numerous players competing at various representative levels within the sport including:
James Shiells (Ireland U19), Tom Wright (Scotland U19), James Stuart-Menteth (Scotland U18A).
The University has tremendous links with the Newcastle Falcons, with Northumbria players frequently featuring in the academy squad during the course of the last season. Recent internationals to have represented the University include Ali Hepher, Martyn Wood, Jamie Noon, Michael Stevenson, Martin Corry and Ross Beattie.
The Women`s side are consistent performers in the BUCS Premier League. A rapidly expanding club, with the introduction of Blaydon Team Northumbria 1st XV(Premiership) and 2nd XV (National Challenge 1 - North) last season. A number of the women's players are currently representing at regional, divisional and international level;
Katy Storie (England), Suzi Newton (Scotland), Kate Hall (England Super 4's), Victoria Rivett (England Super 4's) and Louise Leonard (England U19).
The women's teams had great success in 2007, winning the Regional 10's and the sevens at the Falcon's Festival of Rugby seeing the BTN 1st team crowned champions, the University side runners-up and BTN 2nd's taking 3rd place.
