BACKGROUND
Northumbria University has one of the UK’s leading community sport programmes. Working in partnership with the sport Northumbria Foundation, the University engages over 3,000 adults and young people in sport each year. All of the activities are delivered by students who are actively engaged with the Education Sport professional development programme
Community Sport at Northumbria involves 2 main areas:

SPORT NORTHUMBRIA FOUNDATION
The Sport Northumbria Foundation is a discrete charity that was established in 2005 and works in partnership with Northumbria University to deliver sport to the community.
The aims of the Sport Northumbria Foundation are to:

Introduce people from the North East of England to participation opportunities in sport and health related activity

Provide player pathway opportunities that allow young people to progress in their chosen sport

Establish opportunities for young people to gain experience and qualifications in sport and progress as leaders, volunteers and professionals

Work with strategic partner organisations to develop the region’s sporting infrastructure, in a strategic way, to its social and economic development

Ensure that opportunities are accessible to everyone regardless of background or personal circumstances and to encourage barriers to be broken down for hard-to-reach groups

By working in partnership with Northumbria University and its academic schools, the sport Northumbria Foundation is able to offer an exciting, innovative range of services to schools, community groups and other organisations. All activities are delivered to an exceptional standard by specialist staff and students from the University.
SPORT UNIVERSITIES NORTH EAST ENGLAND (SUNEE)
Northumbria University works as a partner within Sport Universities North East England (SUNEE) which is a strategic partnership between the region’s 5 universities; Northumbria, Durham, Teesside, Sunderland and Newcastle.
With the help of funding through HEFCE, The Football Foundation, The Northern Rock Foundation, Street League and Sport England initial social inclusion and community projects have been set up with the aim of:

Working with hard to reach groups,

Increasing volunteering opportunities for students and members of the community,

Increasing community participation in sport,
-
Developing new coaches into sports.
